リンゼイ・デイヴィス原作のローマ帝国探偵もの『ファルコ』がシリーズ第一話から再放送されています。
The Silver Pigs（日本語訳『密偵ファルコ 白銀の誓い』）は主役のマルクス・ディディウス・ファルコMarcus Didius Falcoが出合い頭に金髪の美少女とぶつかる場面で幕を開けます。
これは・・・ロマンスの予感・・・と思ったのですが、美少女ソシア・カミリナSosia Camillinaは「銀の豚」の秘密を知ってしまって悪漢に追われていて、恋に落ちる暇はありませんでした。
「銀の豚」はブリトンで採掘される銀のインゴットの隠語らしい（駄洒落）。
ファルコはブリトンに渡り銀山奴隷として鉱山に潜入し事件を捜査する。そこですごく第一印象の悪いヘレナ・ジュスティナHelena Justinaと出会い・・・
というのがファルコと元老院議員の令嬢ヘレナの身分違いの恋の始まりなのですね。
ファルコを演じているのはアントン・レッサー。
途中でファルコが２０歳という設定を知ってびっくりしました。声がアントン・レッサーだから中高年かと思ってた。
ファルコは何度も頭を殴られて気絶するので心配です。

『ヴァンパイア・マン』はアイルランドの作家ジョセフ・オコナーによるラジオドラマのようです。
語り手はブラム・ストーカー。ダブリン巡業中の名優ヘンリー・アーヴィングと出会い、ロンドンでの秘書の仕事をオファーされる。妻フローレンスとロンドンへ移住したストーカーだが、仕事は秘書ではなく借金だらけのライシーアム・シアターのマネージャー。
しかも雇い主のアーヴィングは天才で魅力的だが尊大で周囲の人間の忠誠を吸い上げて生きている吸血鬼のような男です。
世紀末のロンドンではジャック・ザ・リッパー事件が起こり、恐怖譚が流行する。
ストーカーはアーヴィングをモデルにドラキュラ伯爵を創造する。
ブラム・ストーカーってアイルランド人なんですね。奥さんはもとはオスカー・ワイルドの恋人だったとか。このラジオドラマでもワイルドの逮捕事件が言及されます。
アントン・レッサーがヘンリー・アーヴィングを演じています。普段の褒め殺しモードと怒り狂った時の強烈な毒舌の演じ分けがさすがです。
劇中劇でハムレットやマクベスを演じるのが聞けるし、ストーカーの空想の中ではヴァンパイアになるし、アントン・レッサーの魅力がたっぷり楽しめる９０分。
Joseph O'Connor drama about the close collaboration and intense friendship between Bram Stoker and the famous Shakespearean actor Henry Irving. Under Irving's reckless tutelage, the young Irish accountant struggled to keep the theatre afloat. Irving's demands were indomitable and over the years Stoker endured the actor's outrageous whims and acerbic tongue. And yet, Stoker remained mesmerised by him, absorbing his traits and suffering his humiliations all the while letting him grow in his imagination until he was ready to release him into the world as Count Dracula.

コリン・ファースとケネス・ブラナーの映画を思い出しながら聞きました。映画以上に原作はドラマチックなことが何も起こらないが、思い通りにいかない人間関係に引き込まれる。田舎というのはヨークシャーだと今回初めて知りました。
