国際女性デーを記念してMary Robinette KowalのThe Calculating Starsを聞いてみました。
英語版のウィキペディアによるとこの作品は
2019 Nebula Award for Best Novel
2019 Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel
2019 Hugo Award for Best Novel
を受賞しています。しかし日本語版がないし、日本のＳＦ界ではあまり話題にならなかったの？
１９５０年代のアメリカが舞台。
隕石が衝突してアメリカのかなりの部分が壊滅。主人公のエルマ・ヨークは天才数学者にしてWASP（Women Airforce Service Pilots）の元パイロットで、計算によって気候変動を予測する。
人類は滅びゆく地球から脱出する計画を立て、エルマは最初の女性宇宙飛行士として月探索チームに加わるが・・・ってストーリー。
「もし最初に月に行ったのが女性宇宙飛行士だったら」という歴史改変ＳＦなのですが、不安になると吐いてしまうほど繊細な主人公が他の女性たちと力をあわせて道を切り開いていく展開に胸が熱くなります。
"Lady Astronaut" シリーズというタイトル通り、エルマはマスコミから「ザ・レディ・アストロノート」（日本語だと「なでしこ宇宙飛行士」みたいな語感だろうか？）と呼ばれ、女性の宇宙進出を代表するアイコンに祭り上げられる。
しかし実際には男社会で宇宙服もサイズ合わないし、雑用ばかり押しつけられるし。数々の差別的な扱いを団結力で乗り越えるが、乗り越えられないことも多い。SFだけど生活の不便や不平等が全部解決しないところが現実味がある。
エルマの台詞に「ごめんなさい」がとても多い。同僚にも家族にもいつもいつも謝ってる。天才なのにこんなに四方八方にあやまる主人公って男ならありえないだろう。
エルマが南部出身のユダヤ人（祖先はドイツからの移民）というのも重要なポイントのようだが、自分にはよく分からなかった。
先日ナショナルシアターライブで見た「リーマン・トリロジー」も南部のユダヤ人が主役だったので、アメリカ人なら意味が分かるのだろう。
他にもよくわからない部分がいくつかあったので日本語訳を切に希望。
パーカーという非常にイヤな上官（しかしハリウッド俳優タイプのハンサムで外面最高）が何かとエルマに意地悪をする。通常なら（韓ドラとかだと）彼とヒロインが反発しあいながらも恋人同士になりそうなものだが、エルマには熱愛する夫がいるので、残念ながらパーカーはただのイヤな教官で終わり。
ヨーク夫妻はいまどきのＳＦにしては珍しく一夫一婦制を律儀に守る夫婦で、二人のお色気シーンが頻繁にある。必要なのか？と思うくらい多い。
