The Calculating Starsが面白かったので、続編The Fated Sky(Lady Astronaut, Book 2)も聞いてみました。
朗読が作者本人ということにあらためて驚きます。すごく演技が上手い。
月から帰還した主人公のエルマ・ヨークは過激派グループに誘拐されてしまう。犯人は「エリートだけが宇宙に逃げて貧乏人は地球に置いてけぼりだ」と憤っている。
この作品は人種差別や経済格差も描いていて、宇宙探索SFにしては各方面に配慮してる。が、貧乏人が出てくるのはここだけでやっぱり基本的にエリートの話だけど。
冷静にピンチを乗り切ったエルマは火星探索チームに選ばれる。愛する夫と離れるのはつらいが、人類（とアメリカの宣伝）のため火星に向かうエルマ。
チームを率いるのはむかつくイケメンのパーカー。相変わらず反発しあうエルマとパーカー。なぜこの二人がカップルにならないのか本当に理解できない。どう見てもくっつくパターンなのに。
と疑問に感じながら読んでてやっと気がついたのですが、男女が（カップルではなく）バディになれるか？を描いているのですね。
アジア人は台湾出身の女性（でも結婚して他の国籍になっているようだ）が一人しか登場せず、アメリカとヨーロッパとアフリカ以外の地域がどうなっているかよく分からない。
日本料理が出てくるので、日本は一応存在してるみたいだけど。
すごく面白かったので日本語訳の出版を期待しています。
